Kink Tank [myspace] [facebook] Kink Tank is a sex-positive/sex-radical discussion, reading, viewing, and knowledge-sharing/skillshare group. We're interested in approaching sex, sexuality, and sexual content (i.e. porn, erotica, etc.) in an open yet critical way as well as creating a safe, respectful, healthy, all-inclusive environment that discusses and analyzes sexuality and sexual expression with a queer and feminist discourse in mind. We are seeking to be a non-judgmental group that is defined or shaped by its participants. It can look like whatever we want it to be, from serious analysis to good old fashion F-U-N (and likely lots of overlap). We come from a sense of urgency felt around embracing sexuality in a society where one is encultured to feel shame and guilt in what satisfies or interests one sexually. Discussions may vary from asking the question: “what is sexuality and why,” to an analysis of the differences between indie versus DIY versus realcore porn, to learning and knowledge-sharing about Radical Consent models. Topics can and should be proposed and determined by participants. Kink Tank is a support group of sorts created to dispel taboo and love our bodies, ourselves, and each other. Yay for consensual sexuality!!!

Please check the Free school website, or the Kink Tank myspace page at www.myspace.com/kinktankdenver for the topic for each week's class. Please note that Kink Tank is a Safer Space; due to the nature of some discussion topics, and what is involved with creating a Safer Space for all participants around some sensitive topics, some weeks we will be closing the door no later than 15 minutes after class time - so in other words, try to be on time!

Modern American Documentaries 07/07 Jesus Camp (2006)

Welcome to the “Kids On Fire” (real name) church camp in Devils Lake, North Dakota. It's the summer getaway for 9-13 year old kids to learn about the evils of liberalism, the imminence of the apocalypse, the lessons of Creationism, and how to shake, cry and scream in the name of Jesus. Here we will view first hand the self-proclaimed “indoctrination” techniques of Becky Fischer, the camp's plump and angry Evangelical leader, whose methods she describes as being influenced by the fundamental Islamic militant camps of the Middle East. Only instead of training these children for a battle of flesh and violence, Fischer is preparing these kids for a battle of the mind, culture and soul.

“I can go into a children's playground and lead them to the lord in no time at all,” Fischer boasts, “and moments later they will be having visions and hearing the voice of God.”

With stunning and provocative footage, “Jesus Camp” provides us with a fly-on-the-wall perspective of one of the most radical and isolated child brainwashing centers in America. The filmmakers, though thorough and wholly entertaining, take no position on the issue of child soldering during the movie; unlike Michael Moore or Morgan Spurlock's subjective muckraking, this documentary simply presents you with a hyperreal world of religion and politics and lets you decide for yourself what to make of it all. It's a testament to the excellence of this film that people on all sides of the issue love it; liberals adore it as an investigative tour of a hysterical fundamentalist world, and Christian conservatives love it as a vehicle for their urgent gospel.

In this class we will watch the film, and follow it with a group discussion lead by Josiah M Hesse, a refugee of the Evangelical movement, who is open to discuss matters of theology, politics, and the naïve soil of a child's mind.

07/14 Bob Dylan: No Direction Home (2005)

07/21 Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S Thompson (2008)

Several attempts have been made to document and present the story of this feverishly intense man of sex, drugs and sentences, but it wasn't until Alex Gibney ("Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room") came along and got all the footage, music and wide-eyed stories together in one film that finally we had a proper look at the greatest American writer of a generation.

Leaping around through footage of his campaign for Sheriff, narrations by Johnny Depp, and interviews with close friends like Jimmy Carter, Pat Buchanan and former Hells Angels, “Gonzo . . .” is a rhythmic presentation of one mans quest to observe and comment on a period of cyclonic chaos in American history.

Mostly covering the golden years of 1965—1975, “Gonzo” gives us an intimate and entertaining glance at the life that lead to such unforgettable books as “Hells Angels,” “Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas,” and “Fear and Loathing On The Campaign Trail.” Anyone familiar with these texts has surely been infected with an itchy curiosity about the man that pried open our eyes to such wild visions. And this documentary is surely the unequivocal champion biography of H.S. Thompson, chronicling his mad fast ride through presidential politics, outlaw bikers, and a Dyonisian lifestyle of drugs and alcohol that mirrors the 60's age of hedonism to varying degrees of pleasure and pain.

In this class we will watch the film, and follow it with a group discussion of the hippy movement, the roles and responsibilities of journalists in society, and the effect of mood altering chemicals on the creative mind.

Science, Sexuality, and Colonialism: A History We have heard it before: in 1492 Columbus "discovered" America. Of course you can't "discover" a land where millions of people already lived. What isn't discussed as much is how science uses the same language as colonialism -- the "discovery" of a continent, or growing "cultures" of bacteria in a "colony." Or how America's "dis-cover"edness is gendered and sexualized. In this class we will learn some of the seldom-taught histories of science, sexuality, and colonialism.

Pre-class potluck from 6-7PM. Class begins at 7.
